Online Job Interview?

Job interviews are a crucial part of the hiring process for most, if not all companies. A job interview is a close conversation with someone that's interested in joining the company. Interviewers get a chance to really get a feel for how the interviewee acts, reacts, thinks, and even presents his/herself. How can this be learned by the interviewer if the interview is held online? How is the interviewee able to best present his/herself in an online interview?

Read this article from TIME, and respond to the following questions:

- What are a few benefits for having online interviews? (For the interviewer AND interviewee)
- What are some disadvantages?
- What are a few tips for being in an online job interview?
- Do you think you would prefer or not prefer to be interviewed online? Why?

One benefit of having online interviews for the interviewer or the interviewee is there is not traveling required. Say that your car breaks down and you cannot make it that would not be an issue because you are already where you are taking the interview. Another benefit for the interviewee is that people tend to feel more comfortable in nerve-wrecking situations such as an interview when it is not in person. Last, the interviewer can select fewer people to come for the face to face interview by eliminated people through online interviews. A disadvantage of taking an online interview is people may feel too relaxed and not treat it like an interview, such as not dress up properly. Also, there would be a bad connection and not be able to understand each other as easily and misinterpret information. Some things you can do to get a good online job interview is to angle your knees to the corner of your computer screen, do NOT take the interview against a plain white wall, and make sure that you are not too close to the camera. I personally would rather take an interview in person because it will feel more realistic and I do not have to worry about things like a bad internet connection and focus more on what I have to bring to the company.

  2. Kelsey Welzen- By choosing to have an interview over a webcam rather than a phone, an interviewer can get the feel of the interviewees personality, body language, and confidence. Cheaper cost, less time, and convenience are major benefits of having an interview online. A few drawbacks are: bad connections, messy spaces, and interruptions. When you prepare for a cyber interview, make sure: that your space is clean, stay away from white walls and clothing, put any pets out of the room and hearing range, look at the camera when you speak, and view the screen when your interviewer speaks to you. I think that I would like being interviewed in person (because I like talking face to face) but I think that it takes some pressure off the interview when you first talk online.

Having a job interview online has many benefits but it also has many disadvantages. Some disadvantages are if you are on a laptop where you have a wireless connection often the signal is dropped and the web-cam chat could be disconnected. Having the interview from the comfort of your home can also be a disadvantage because if you have a messy house it shows that you are unorganized. Some benefits of not leaving your home are you don't have to worry about being late for the interview, but you still need to present yourself nicely. I think if you do an online job interview you should make sure you have a stable internet connection and present yourself and your home in an organized and presentable way. I would not prefer to be interviewed online because I think it takes away the purpose of getting to know someone in person.

  5. Kevin Conrad 5th Hour-The online interviews save time and money. The person who is being interviewed doesn't have to travel some where to talk to an admission or who ever it is that you need to talk to. There could be a loss of signal, the interviewer could think that the person being is lazy where they cant come to there office. Don't take the interview in your pajamas or crawl right out of bed. I would dress as if i was going to the office to see them. I think i would rather get interviewed over the computer because ten you are more comfortable because your in your home.

A few benefits of interviewing online are; it's cheaper, easier, faster, and much more productive than the original interviewing way. Some disadvantages would be the webcam might not work, the call could end, can't hear the person as well as you would if you were talking in person, and sometimes there are distractions in the background that influences the interviewer's decision. A few tips are;Get your dog out of barking range before you start the interview, look at the camera when talking, make eye contact, avoid patterns and a lot of white, and so much more. I think that i would prefer the webcam because when you are at home you seem to be more relaxed and that would probably help with succeeding in the interview.

The advantages of having an online interview is that the business saves money on flying you out for a job interview and paying for the hotel. Also the person being interviewed can be interviewed in the comfort of his own home. Some disadvantages is that there maybe some hiccups with the equipment that you use for a job interview. Some tips for a job interview is that you can't dress inappromriately and you can't have a messy room where you do your interview. You also got to be set just right for your interview for the camera. You don't want to be to close or to far away from the camera. I would prefer to be interviewed online so that way I won't have to travel for a job interview and I can do the interview at my house.

I think it wouldn't be a very good idea to have interviews online because there is no way to tell if they are lying and you don't meet the person. They could do it on web cam but i think it would be better in person because you can actually be able to talk to the person in person. if you live far away it would be a good thing but they could cover up who they really are. i would rather go in to meet the person i might be working with in the future.

Benefits include that you wouldn't have travel expenses. It is better than phone calls because seeing peoples body language can help you understand what they are trying to say. Some people don't like to be on camera so that could change how they act. Also lighing and the background can affect what the interviewers pay attention to. When on an online job interview make sure the lighting is good, dress like you would for the meeting as if it were in person, have 3 buttons of your shirt showing, make sure your background is clean. I'd prefer to do an online interview, if you are looking for a job then you probably don't have money for traveling expeneses.

A few benefits for having online interviews for the interviewer and interviewee are that is saves time and money and the interviewee does not have to leave the comfort of their home. Some disadvantages are fuzzy transmission, dropped calls, and unusual disruptions. Some tips for being in an online interview are to be sure the background is appealing, be sure there are no bright lights in the background, and you want your interviewer drawn to your eyes and your teeth, so avoid wearing white since that is what your eyes are drawn to on a screen. I would prefer to be interviewed online because that would save me time and money as well as me being comfortable in my homes atmosphere.

A few benefits for online interviews are it saves both the interviewer and the interviewee money and time. Some disadvantages are if you have distractions in the background such as a dog barking, glitches from your webcam, or if your set the webcam to close to your face. A few tips for an online interview would be still to dress nicely as if you were doing in face to face, don't wear a white shirt because you want the interviewer to see your pearly white teeth and eyes instead of the shirt. I would perfer because interviewed over the internet because it's saving me gas money, and time driving there and back or flying there and back.

  12. Nicole.S 5th hour- Some disadvantges are that the person that is interviewing you could see a mess that you left behin, or you guys could loose connection. Som tips are not to wear patterns or a white shirt, because the inteviewer can see spots easier. Make sure your in a quiet place, and not a lot of activity is going on. I wouldn't like to get interviewed over a webcam, because there are so many things that can go wrong, or something you could do wrong while you get interviewed.

There are many benefits for doing interviews over the internet. It cost a lot less money to do interviews online than flying there interviewees all the way to where they are located. Especially if they don't even know if this person is fit for the job yet. Interviewees also benefit from this as well. They are more likely to get an interview from someone in California or Texas if it is over the internet. It is also more convenient, and costs less. Some disadvantages for interviewing over the internet include things such as a staticy connection, or just that the background looks a little messy. Some tips to remember for interviewing online are to make eye contact with the camera, not the person on the screen. Also watch the little things like lighting, and what color your wearing. And make sure not to forget that the person on the other side is not only going to see you, but this person is going to see what is behind you as well. I would definitely prefer an interview online.I feel like it wouldn't be so much pressure if it was on a computer screen. I also wouldn't want to fly out somewhere far away for an interview that I possibly couldn't even get.

  14. I think that some disadvantages of job interviewing online is that you do not actually get to see the person you would be working for. While being on an online interview you probably should spell everything right and not use slang in your messages. I would prefer not to be interviewed for a job online, because i would like to see the person I am talking to and see the place where/if i worked there.

A few benefits for having online interviews is to save time and money, you don't have to fly out 20 people for only 2 or 3 job spots, instead you can use Skype. You can also send your resume to more than just your local area. Things don’t always run smoothly. Some disadvantages might be dropped calls, and candidates leaning forward instead of sitting back so all you can see is their nose. A few tips are: make sure there's no bright light, make eye contact, sit tall, keep your dog out of barking range, and dress as if your meeting them face to face. No, because I'd rather meet the interviewer face to face. I believe my personality would show better.

Online interviewing can be very useful and save time. The interviewer can learn how the interviewee thinks and reacts with well planned and strategic question. However, i believe that the interviewee does not have a very good way to present him/herself.

I think its a good idea to use web cams for job interviews. It saves a lot of money. Some disadvantages are calls getting dropped, cameras freezing, etc. Get your dog out of barking range is a very good tip, because you cant just leave and go take care of it during the middle of the interview. I wouldn't mind having a job interview on skype or any other web cam. I enjoy talking on the web cam already.

Some of the benefits too online interviews are, you can save a lot of time and money. The interviewers can then also stay in the comfort of there own home. some if the disadvantages are, the transmission of the webcam can be fussy and you can also freeze and drop the call. some tips to make a good online interview are: keep your dog out of the barking range of the computer. The only reason i would use an online interview is too , get an interview done if the job was out of the state and i would not have to drive ll the way there to get told no.

Well personally I don't think it's a bad idea because a few benefits are not having to leave your house if you don't have a way of getting there that day. Some disadvantages are that they don't see how you really react in a different environment other than your own home, and you might not look or act like that normally, and the webcam could get fuzzy or freeze. There is a tip for online interviews this tip includes getting your dog out of barking range of your computer before you start your interview.
I personally would rather do an online interview because I have a hard time finding a way to get to places on time, but if I had a way I would rather go to the actual interview with a person face-to-face.

  20. Szydlowski_D 1sthour- Throughout these interviews these web cams help out a lot. They save tons of money for the interviewer, and time for the interviewee (the oersin getting interviewed). On the other side these interviews are often dropped, another example is that they can her everything in your house, including dogs, birds, and music so you want to be in a respectable play and you want that place to be quiet. I would rather go to an interview at the work place so I can get an idea of the work place.

Sometimes the job your having a interview for its a little bit aways but when you have and online interview you don't have to drive all that way its right there on the screen. When your an employeer and you have to talk to your employee on the phone with an online interview you have a less chance on dropping a call or loosing serivice its a easy one way shot. Some disadvantages that are out there is it cost quiet a bit of money or sometimes some things can interfere with you job interview ex) kids whining, dog barking, phone ringing. etc)When you do have an online interview you want to sit up straight and talk clearly and have what you want to say all ready and be prepared. I dont think i would want to be interviewed i think i would be way to nervous and i would mess up really easy.

A few benefits are that it saves time and money having an online interview. They don't have to spend money on an airfare when you can do it over webcams. Some disadvantages are fuzzy transmissions, drop calls (mostly on a wireless network), and unusual disruptions. One tip is to get your dog out of barking range so he doesn't interrupt your interview. I would prefer to do it online only because I would like to save money. If there wasn't online interviewing I would pay money for an airfare ticket. But why pay money if you don't have to.

A few benefits of having a online interview would be that your comfortable in your own house and your not getting nerves. Another benefit would be you could have a list of things to remember to say and the boss would never know. For the person interviewing you a benefit would be that it would allow them to see your facial expressions while talking and how you express yourself! The disadvantages are obviously fuzzy transmissions, dropped calls (especially on wireless networks) and unusual disruptions. Here are a few tips on online interviews, get your dog out of barking range before you start the interview also make sure there's no bright light behind you. That will only darken your face, when your interviewer is talking, it's fine to look at his image on the screen, but when you answer, look at the camera. I think I would do a Skype interview because i would feel way more comfortable in my own home! I also would think I would be less nerves.

A few of the benifits of having online interveiws is: the interweiwer dose not have to pay for a flight out there and the put up for the night, and only flying out a couple...for the interveiwee if they have no more funds they would be allowed to present them selves through the comfort of their own homes
some of these disadvantages are dropped calls, barking dogs, and fuzzy transmitions.
Some tips are keeping it quiet. zero interuptions andgood connetion.
I would perfer this because it is inexpensive. your in your home, yur comfortable and if you get nervouse you can stop and retake it up later.

one benefits are you can save gas and time.
some disadvantages are if you're computer breaks or crashes you cant make the interview.
some tips are be ready for any thing like random questions and stuff like that.
i would not because if my computer would break i would not make it so it would be kind of hard to make it.

a few benefits are you save time and money and its way cheaper. some disadvantages are that it may replace some people and really need to make sure that no one is around and everything around you is clean and theres no loud noises because everyone who is in the room with the employer can see and hear all of it. a few tips are to make sure that you look good just like a regular interview and everything around you is clean. no i do not prefer to be interview online because you don't get the full effect of the person that you is interviewing you as well for the for interviewer they don't get to see the real you and they cant really tell who you are yes it saves money and time but i would just rather drive to a place to be interviewed.

Some benefits of having job interviews using webcams is that the interviewer doesn't have to worry about the other person running late or or just the fact that it might not take as long over the internet. This is extremely handy if the interviewer is REALLY busy. For the interviewee, they wouldn't even have to leave the house, and who says your surroundings can't improve your first impression. It can prove that your organized and not a bum. Disadvantages include bad internet services, jumpy connections and lagging out. Tips for a good interview-Make sure there are no distractions and make sure everything looks good and your still well dressed. I think it is a matter of opinion. If you like things old fashioned and don't have a computer you definitely want to go in person. Otherwise the webcam is very handy.

Some tips for a online job interview are tell excatly what's going to happen. Some other one's are sending the person you are interviewing a packet of what you are talking about. so they can see what;s going on and it he doesn't know what you are talking about on the webcam. I think i would want to do the interview in person so i know how everything's working out and what they are talking about. and also because the webcam can be messing up and not working right.

A few benefits for having online interviews are you can replace an in-person meeting and in a way a phone call can't. The interviewer can see your facial expressions and body language so you could get the job easily.

Some disadvantages are you could be you could mess up on a ton of the job interviews. Like if the interviewee leans forward the interviewer will get a good look at your nose. Or if the interviewee doesn't clean there room and it's all visible in the background. Or if there's a dog in the background that won't stop barking.

Whether you're sitting in your kitchen or an office borrows from a friend make sure there's no bright light from a window behind you. That will only darken your face. avoid wearing white pattern. Look into the camera to make eye contact when your talking to the interviewer.

I think i would rather be interviewed in person because you don't have to worry about setting everything up and your house being tidy or your dog barking to loud and won't stop. Or even if your phone rings and it interrupts your talking, or even if someone comes to the door and sees that your home and rings the doorbell five million times.

  33. B. Moore 1st~ Job interveiws sometimes scare people or even make them nerve probably because they weren't ready or because they don't feel comfortable. Well, now you can have a job interveiw online.

A few benefits for having online interveiws for the interveiwers they save money by not having to buy the airline tickets to send them there for an hour job interveiw. It replaces an in-person meeting in a way that a phone call can't. For the interveiwees they can apply for any job anywhere. For example a who is looking for a computer job in the major schools can be interveiwed at his/her house if the company that is interveiwing him doesnt pay for the airline tickets.

Some disadvantages are fuzzy transmissions, dropped calls (especially on wireless networks) and unusual disruptions are all par for the course. Also having to find the right time ecspecially when in different time zones.

Some tips that will help make your online job interveiw a sucess are get your dog out of barking range before you start the interview. Make sure there's no bright light (like from a window) behind you. That will only darken your face. When your interviewer is talking, it's fine to look at his image on the screen, but when you answer, look at the camera. That's how to make "eye contact." Avoid wearing patterns and the color white, since we notice white spots on a screen first you want your interviewer drawn to your teeth and eyes, not to your shirt. And don't forget that what's behind you is visible too. Sitting flush with a plain white wall will make you look like you're in a police lineup, so angle your knees to the corner of your computer screen, and then turn your head slightly back to look at the camera. Sit tall in your chair, but not too close to the camera: the first three buttons of your shirt should be visible, or else you risk looking like a floating head. Most important, do a dry run with a friend to check your color, sound and facial expressions neutral often comes off as glum onscreen.

I would prefer to be interveiwed online because then i don't have to apply for jobs near where i live but i can apply for a job anywhere. Also I can be interveiwed in the confort of my home instead of a strange office that i don't know.

Some of the benefits of online interviews are that it saves time and money. You don't have to pay or take the time to travek to the interview, and that benefits both the interviewer and the interviewee.
Some of the disadvantages of online interview that you can't really see the other persons facial expressions and it might be hard to see with certain lighting and the way you are positioned. Another disadvantage is that if you are a messy person the interviewer will be able to see that and they might not hire you for that reason.
Some tips are to make sure you treat it like a normal interview. Have all the same things ready, and dress as you would to a face to face interview. Also make sure your lighting is good. The interviewer needs to see you face.
I would't care to do an online interview if the interviewer lived close. But if the interviewer lived far away I would definately do the online interview, I don't really see the point of spending all that money if you have anoher choice to not spend any at all.
