Invasion of Privacy by Google?

Have you or someone you know ever used Google Maps? I use it all the time to find directions to where I'm going. Some would say it has gotten even more convenient with "Street View". With this realistic view you can see what an undiscovered area will look like when you get there. However, some people think it is an invasion of privacy. Watch the video below and tell us what you think. Is it an invasion of privacy? How can it be a useful tool? What should Google do in response?

  1. justin b -i really don’t think that I maters really if you use Google map or not because you really aren’t hiding anything. its not like you can look into someone’s house, you can find more personal things on YouTube then on Google map, you see more into a person’s house if you were to drive by it then if you go onto a street view on Google, i think instead of going through personal stuff we should be looking at things that are more important

  2. I've used Google Maps before, and I think it's a great idea. It helps people see landmarks of areas that they aren't familiar with to help prevent being lost. I do think that it's an invasion of privacy though. I would feel extremely self-conscious walking around, fearing that I would get caught in the photo of the area. I think Google should take night pictures of streets only and brighten them to allow a little visual of the nearby landmarks and buildings.

  3. Lexey P.- I've never used a Google map. I don't Know anyone that has used a Google map either.I do not think that it is an invasion of privacy.I could see it being a lot of help for someone who is bad with directions. If they don't know where they are going they will at least know what the general area looks like. It is useful because it is a map and can help you get where you need to go.

  4. Bryan M-
In my opinion it is not an invasion of privacy. I use google maps, including street view, frequently. I use it becuase it bewidlers me how advanced the technology is with maps and whatnot. I can't see how it's an invasion of privacy, it's just a picture of the street and whatever is on the street.
It can be a useful tool because if you're driving to a new area then it helps to see what is in the area of which you are going to. For example if you are driving to a friends house you can look it up on Google maps with the street view and see what the house is next to.
In my own opinion Google should do nothing, or change nothing. Unless of course it is proven to be an invasion of privacy, in which case they would have to change it. It should be worried about when that bridge is crossed

  5. I think it's rediculous how people can do this kind of stuff. You can just go on your computer at home and look anywhere in the world. That's not right in my opinion. Privacy is a big virtue in life and this isn't respecting it.

  6. 612- I have never used Google Maps, but I have used Google Earth. I think the street view that Google Maps has is a little creepy, because anyone can look at people walking on the street. I think it can be an invasion of privacy, but if you use it for directions, the maps can be helpful. I think that if Google were to keep the street view, they should take away the pictures of people and their lives.

  7. 607-Personally I have used google maps, I found it very useful when i needed to find the places that I would go to if I did not know where it was. I think that it is a great way to view something or some place to see if you truely want to go there or not. I also think that it is an invasion of privacy because people should be able to do what they want if they are on their own property, and also the person that is filming should have to ask if they can put those pictures on google or not with their faces showing. I think that google should have a board meeting or something on the lines of that to discuss what they should do about that because if someone really wanted they could sue them for not asking permission to put something on the computer that can be seen by anyone.

  8. 614- i dont think its right at all. You shouldnt be able to just go online and get directions anywhere. i think it is a big invasion of privacy.

  9. 618- Personally I have used Google maps before. I also think that it is an invasion of privacy. But I think that there are some ways Google can avoid the people who think that it is an invasion of privacy. One way is when they take street views that they can digitally remove the people in the pictures. Google map can be a useful tool by finding directions, or to see your childhood homes right now.

  10. I can see where people would get the idea that Google maps is an invasion of privacy, but I really don’t think its as serious as some say. I myself have used it many times…not to spy on anyone or anything, but when my mother and I were looking for houses to rent we used it. We used it again when on vacation in Jamestown, New York to see how to get places. I do think Google should refrain from taking the images in more crowded cities, because of the people, but other than that, I do not think they should stop what they are doing. Obviously people have used it, hence the complaints. It is somewhat a touchy issue. Maybe they could clear out the people before they take the images? I don’t know, but somehow I would imagine people would start complaining about that as well. Google should just continue what they are doing, remove unwanted images, and so forth. If they get sued..that’s another story, but until then, let them do want.

  11. I think it is a bad idea for them to have street view just bcause of privacy. I mean what happens if someone be doing something intimae or something that could be really embarrising. It is not a good idea

  12. Ive used google maps before and it actually helped out to know where or what you were looking for when your going somewhere. In ways its an invasion of privacy, because the people and everything should not be shown in the camera view. People are unconfortable with that. I think google should rethink about what there taking pictures of trying to help us, when sometimes it bugs people.

  13. 613- I’ve never used Google Maps, but I’m sure someone I know has. I think that it isn’t an invasion of privacy. If whatever it is that you are doing, you’re doing in public, than the public should be able to see it. I could understand if the camera could see inside your house, but the road is a public place and if you do something illegal, or something just simply embarrassing, it was done in public and the public has every right to know it. I think that Google Maps Street View can be a useful tool. Not only for where you’re trying to get to (Like MapQuest, except for with a picture), but for the government and upholding the law. Like in the video, some very interesting acts were occurring that the police should know about. I think Google should “suck it up” and deal with the bad publicity. What they are doing is not wrong.

  14. Mandy E.-I think that in a way, it is an invasion of privacy for those who would feel more comfortable knowing they aren't being watched. I don't think that people have to worry about it unless they are trying to hide something, and it isn't necessarily an invasion of privacy because it is in the public eye. I think that it is a good idea for people visiting a new area and curious about it's general layout. It can help people find certain places, let them know what to expect, and get familiar with large areas. Maybe if google recieves extreme complaints, they should blur people faces or bodies even, but that is a little out of hand.

  15. 619-
I believe Google Maps has taken it too far with the cameras being able to see in street view. As the video states, there are many complaints and photos taken off of Google Maps every day. It is obvious that people are getting their privacy invaded by this.
Although this is an invasion of privacy to many people it seems, this is still a very useful tool. I agree that it will help out with people going to a new town or city and need to know there way around. I also believe it helps many people with driving/traveling directions. I think Google should try and somehow make Street View invade less of a person's privacy.
